Our Eggs Have Hatched!

So much fun enjoying time with our new baby chickens!

The eggs began to crack on Monday.  By Tuesday morning we had one baby chick.  By the end of the day on Tuesday, we had 5 new baby chicks.  We ended up with 11 new baby chicks hatching this week!

Some friends made a sign for the brooder box to welcome the new baby chickens!
Last week one student made a sign to begin the count down of how many days we still had to wait before our chicks might start hatching!!

Exploring Sun and Shade

This week we added leaves (sticky notes) to model trees to create shade and block as much light as possible from reaching the the surface of the earth.

We also used straws, connectors and paper  to design a shade structure to block the warming effect of the sun throughout a day.

BIG Friend/Little Friend: Sail Cars

Special thank to our BIG Friends for helping us build sail cars today.  We had a great time creating the design of our cars and then testing them.

Sugaring Season: Gathering Sap

Over the past two days we collected 20 gallons of sap!

We really  like checking our buckets to see  if any sap flowed since the last time we gathered.

Sugaring Season: Tapping Maple Trees

Special thanks to Mr. Dan for coming to school today to teach us how to tap maple trees.
We each had a turn to drill the hole, tap in the spout, hang the bucket and put the lid on our bucket.

The sap started flowing right away!
