Wind Energy: Designing and Testing Sails

We designed sailboats and tested them on a string track.  Students could choose to make sails from index cards or copy paper.  Just like engineers, students were able to modify their sailboats after observing their performance on the string track.

Wind FUNdamentals Kit

After reading I Face the Wind, we explored energy that we get from the wind.

We made two different pinwheels and compared them to see which one would be faster.

Animal Posters

Our BIG Friends helped us again as we made presentation boards about our animals.  We showed our animals habitat, what they eat and an interesting fact about our animal.

Animal Dioramas

Special thanks to our BIG Friends for helping us with our Moosealamoo Animal Dioramas.  We hope to see some of these animals when we visit Moosalamoo this Spring.

Sugar on Snow

No trip to the Sugar House is complete without a Sugar-on-Snow celebration.  We tasted our yummy treat with doughnuts and dill pickles!

Begin Family Sugar House

Mark and Jeff put us right to work when we arrived at the Begin Family Sugar House this week.  We gathered sap from the buckets hanging on the trees and dumped them into the gathering tank.
Steam was coming out of the Sugar House as we approached it.
The sap was boiling away inside the evaporator.
Mrs. Begin was putting Maple Syrup into containers.
Jeff showed us how they tap the trees.  We could see the sap flowing in the tubing.
Sugaring time also means it is MUD season!
Thank you Begin Family for a fun visit to your Sugar House and for the delicious Maple Syrup!!

VEEP Kit: Designing Light Blocking Structures

In this lesson, students worked to construct a shade structure to block the sunlight.  Each team had the same materials: 12 straws, 7 connectors, masking tape  and 5 pieces of paper.    After building our structures, we tested their light blocking ability using paper to draw the shadows they created.
