Bird Beaks

During this investigation, we learned that there are many different types of bird beaks and that bird beaks are specially adapted to eat particular types of food.  At each  "bird food" station, we had to decided which of the three tools would work to get the food and then decide which bird had a beak that worked like the tool.

Edible Owl Faces

We made edible "owl faces" for snack today using rice cakes and cream cheese or sun butter.   They were so cute but more important , they tasted good!

Service Learning at Silver Lake State Park

Katie and Jake welcomed us to the Park and explained about their job as Park Rangers.  They sent us off into groups to work in the park.  Each group had a different task for the day.  Some planted flowers, some planted trees, some put mulch on trails and my group cleaned up camp sites.

Holly Knox and Woodsy Owl from the Forest Service met us at the park to thank us for cleaning up the park and to remind us of Woodsy message "Give a hoot, don't pollute".

After lunch, we enjoyed a little recess time on the park playground!!

In the afternoon, students completed outdoor nature activities to earn a super, cool Jr. Ranger patch!

Bird Feet

We are learning how birds are adapted to live in their habitats.  We learned that different types of birds use their feet in different ways and that feet come in different shapes and sizes.  We learned that birds use their feet for walking, running, perching, swimming, climbing and grabbing.  After studying different bird feet, we created our own bird feet with modeling dough.  We added pipe cleaner legs and a picture of a bird.
